Excerpt from Cornet Joseph Parsons One of the Founders of Springfield and Northampton, Massachusetts; Springfield, 1636; Northampton, 1655: An Historical Sketch From Original Sources, Viz;, Town, County, Court, and Private Records This biographical sketch of one of the founders of Springfield and Northampton, Cornet Joseph Parsons, who for many years was a leading and influential spirit in the early settlement of the Massachusetts towns in the Connecticut Valley, was written at the request of General Lewis B. Parsons of Flora, Ill, President Albert Ross Parsons of New York, and Professor Charles L. Parsons of Durham, N. H, who for many years have taken great interest in that history of their ancestor and of the time and place of which he was a part. General Parsons has, during the last fifty years - he has recently passed his eightieth birthday - given the subject much study, although residing far remote from where his ancestor spent the greater part of his life. This historical review is almost entirely from original sources - town, county, court, and private records, for the first time, having been carefully searched for this purpose. The facts concerning the life of one of the very earliest settlers of Springfield and Northampton are brought into that relation with what was transpiring and with those associated with him, which gives the true perspective to the more important events which were then crystallizing into enduring history. It has been the aim of the writer to give the every-day transactions and life of the subject of this sketch in such detail as to set forth the mode of life in a period which has been obscured by the lapse of time. Cornet Joseph Parsons was pre-eminently a man of business and, with perhaps a single exception, the most prosperous and successful of any of the settlers, at a time when this garden of New England had hardly reached the dignity of a hamlet.
