This is the story of Clara Kraus, a Hungarian Jew who was married to a Yugoslavian Jew. In 1944, while living in a town near the border of Hungary, the Nazi menace caught up with Clara. She was alone, her husband having not returned from forced labor. She was also pregnant. Clara and the other Jews in her town were put on a train to Auschwitz, but her journey ended in a camp in Austria, in close proximity to the Mauthausen death camp where, unknown to her, her husband was incarcerated. Her second child, Paul, was born in the camp in October 1944, and his survival was almost certainly unique in Holocaust history. Clara escaped from the camp at the end of January 1945, although her return to Budapest was fraught with fear, not knowing if any of her family had survived. Clara Kraus and her two children did survive, and they were eventually reunited with her husband. His Yugoslavian nationality was instrumental in their being able to emigrate to Australia. A horror voyage ensued which took eight weeks on a crowded boat, with terrible food, insanitary conditions, and a chicken pox/whooping cough epidemic. Clara's story demonstrated her bravery, courage, and determination. Yet, she faced even more challenges in conservative Sydney of the 1950s. The family settled in Chatswood and Clara's husband obtained work sewing buttons on raincoats. Clara started a high class dress salon, since she had trained as a dress maker in Hungary due to the fact that, despite her intelligence, a university education had been denied to her. She was determined to give her sons the best start in life possible, and, for a while, she was the household's main breadwinner. But the scars of the wartime experience remained. The woman who had the fortitude and courage to escape a forced labor camp with a toddler and a baby in arms, in the middle of winter, was not one to settle into passive domesticity. Clara never allowed circumstances to dictate to her. She was an extreme individualist, and she abundantly exhibited courage, determination, and resilience in circumstances that would have broken many women.
