While this defiant welcome to a common enemy was still exciting discontent and criticism, I happened to be in a bookseller's shop with a friend, whose name, if I might mention it, would carry weight with the reading public of to-day, and he took up a book entitled 'Chamois Hunting in the Mountains of Bavaria, by Charles Boner.' 'Here,' he said, 'is the true manly spirit, without any of the humbug of muscular Christianity, and odes to the North-East Wind.' I consider this remark as my introduction to Charles Boner, though it was not till some time afterwards that I knew him in the flesh.
