Excerpt from Life of Blessed Oliver Plunket Having then discharged his duty in Rome, he bid farewell to the Eternal City, and proceeded forthwith on his return journey to London. On his arrival in the English capital, he paid his first visit to Father Howard, to whom he had a letter of introduction from Monsignor Barberino, Cardinal Protector of Ireland. This truly worthy man, as Dr. Plunkett tells us, secretly lodged me for ten days in his own apartments in the Royal Palace, and with great kindness conducted me in his carriage, to see the principal curiosities of the city. Although he had no desire to remain in London, yet as Parliament was to be Opened on the 14th February, be deemed it advisable to prolong his stay, in order to see for himself whether any further coercive legislation would be passed, which would be calculated to raise a storm, and render the exercise of his missionary duties in Ireland all the more difficult.
