Recent research in advanced prostate cancer appears promising and will focus on non-hormonal factors such as gene therapy, prolongation of androgen sensitivity, and molecular triggers to induce apoptosis. This book also reviews the major urological tumors and by and large supports the idea that early detection and surgical removal of the tumor results in long-term survival. The chapters on bladder and urinary collecting system tumors emphasize that superficial disease is common and may be treated by surgical excision endoscopically and treatment with topical chemotherapy and immune therapy such as BCG. Testis tumors demonstrate the success with surgical excision and chemotherapy, and what was considered a fatal tumor 25 years ago is now within the realm of cure in most cases. Chapter 7 on urinary diversions shows that recreation and reconstruction of the urinary system with bowel segments has many ramifications and can result in successful reconstruction without the need for ostomies.
