This book is a facsimile reprint of the only surviving account book of an eighteenth-century American pewterer. Its creator was Henry Will (1734-ca.1802), one of early America's most gifted pewterers, who plied his trade in New York City and Albany, New York, between 1763 and 1796. The book's pages record thousands of business transactions with almost 300 individuals and companies, all in Will's attractive, legible handwriting. An extraordinary variety of household, ecclesiastical, and commercial artifacts, incuding teapots, tankards, mugs, porringers, basins, spoons, funnels, inkstands, flagons, chalices, measures, and buttons are listed, testifying to the importance and range of uses of this attractive alloy at the time. Included is a 23-page alphabetical index that Will created naming all of his customers, most of whom were householders, but with a sampling of professionals, including tanners, sailmakers, cabinetmakers, innholders and even bakers, most of whom were located in New York State, Connecticut and New Jersey. The author has also included thirty large black and white photographs representative of all the known forms in pewter by him that have survived. In addition, he has written an interpretive introduction outlining the significance of Will and his document as a useful tool for the researcher and collector, as well as anyone interested in life in early America.
