The second volume of the "Essays and Studies" series presents the particularly welcome "voice from the outside". In response to a special request from the Centre for Studies on the Classical Tradition in Poland and East-Central Europe, University of Warsaw (OBTA), the outstanding specialist in rhetoric and Byzantine literature and the author of "Rhetoric in the European Tradition", Professor Thomas M. Conley from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, devoted his time and attention to the role of Byzantine inspirations in Old Polish literature. The results of his work are very important. First, there came into existence a valuable source study addressed to the international audience. The author examines the role of the Byzantine tradition in the area which, in this respect, has remained wholly beyond interests of Western scholars. Professor Conley points to the specific character of this region and considers it a part of the realm of the Western humanistic culture, thus speaking in recommendation of studies on the problem to scholars of the world. Secondly, the author remains totally unbiased, as he is not engaged in the argument between the Latin and the Greek-Byzantine trend of the classical tradition, which permeates the cultural memory of Central Europe. The text was originally presented as a paper at the session organized by the Centre and Institute of Literary Research of Polish Academy of Sciences in October 1992 in Warsaw.
