Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Theology - Islamic theology, grade: 2,3, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: This paper attempts to show how Muslims and their religion [Islam] are represented in the mass media in aspects of Islamophobic and negatively portrayal through the news, which leads to a misrepresentative and stereotypical view. It is firstly necessary to clarify what is meant by the term Islam. This chapter will give some information on Islam's religion as a monotheistic religion, and it is over the desire to get an improved apprehension. Additionally important is to introduce what the word Islamophobia means, considering the root of this word and the coverage in the media. The third chapter is concerned with the methodology used for this study. For this section, headlines of different newspapers were analysed because of the choice of words and phrasing. Chapter four presents the findings of this research. The next chapter provides a discussion in which the research question if Islamophobia is a threat to the media will be analysed in more detail with the given results. In conclusion, the research question will be acknowledged, and the main reason if Islamophobia is present in the mass media will be clarified. Still, also the conclusion recapitulates all the findings concerning how Muslims are delineated in medial contexts. The power of the mass media reports what people think of the news, issues, and events in the world which are enveloped and framed through images and information. Attitudes and the way of how people assume about this news are broadly shaped by the media. Nevertheless, knowledge, education, experiences, and interest considering the collected information influence opinions and perspectives. The main aim of the mass media is to maintain the majority of the audience and inform about the news that includes different ethnicities, unknown places, and unusual events regarding the Western culture that are not precisely accomplished. In this way, the media represents the insurance of Muslims narrowly, minimal, inaccurate, and misrepresentative. In other words, the stereotypical Muslim is depicted as an adherer of terrorism, the fanatic bearded Muslim, misogynist regarding the coverage of women who are presented as oppressed and veiled.
