Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Unequalled Collection of Engraved Portraits, Vol. 5 This catalogue represents the fifth part of the extensive collection of En graved Portraits gathered by the Hon. James T. Mitchell; Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, and includes American Statesmen from Colonial times to the present day, and, of course, embraces his extraordinary collection of Portraits of Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Henry Laurens, Alex. Hamilton, Henry Clay, and Daniel Webster, and his extensive and important collection of Portraits of Benj. Franklin, which is probably the most important we have ever sold. Among these will be found many rare mezzotinto engravings, as well as in line and stipple. Of a few of these we have made facsimiles for the purpose of giving an idea of the importance of the collection as a whole. Special mention should also be made of the original Portraits in sepia by Col. John Trumbull, which were purchased by the Chief Justice at the Trumbull sale made by me in 1896, as also of the original sets as issued of the Portraits after Du Simitiere by Reading, B. B. E., and Prevost, and the original India ink Portraits by Rosenthal, from which he made his etchings for illustrating the Washington Inaugural Centennial. There is also a full set of the H. E. Hall private club portraits and many special limited etchings. After the statesmen, are included the Chief Justices of the United States, the attorneys-general of the United States, and American Judges and Lawyers, embracing the large collection of Portraits of John Jay and Chief Justice Marshall; of the latter there is an interesting full - length profile portrait in wax by Patience Wright. Unfortunately, of the legal lights of our country, there were few portraits engraved by the masters of the burin of an early date, but those that could be had will be found herein. There are, however, many fine mezzotints and etchings by the most noted artists of our own days, mostly signed and limited proofs, and many are such as are sought after for framing. Personal courage seems to have been Monck´s only virtue reserve and dissimulation made up the whole stock of his wisdom. There is reason to believe that, from the general bias of the Presbyterians, as well as of the Cavaliers, monarchy was the prevalent wish but it is observable that, although the Parliament was, contrary to the principle upon which it was pretended to be called, composed of many avowed Royalists, yet none dared to hint at the restoration of the King till they had Monck´s permission, or rather command, to receive and consider his letters. It is impossible, in reviewing the whole of this trans action, not to remark, that a general who has gained his rank, reputation, and station in the service of the Republic, and what he as well as others called, however falsely, the cause of liberty, made no scruple to lay the nation prostrate at the feet of a monarch, without a single provision in favour of that cause and, if the promise of indemnity may seem to argue that there was some attention, at least, paid to the safety of his associates in arms, his subsequent conduct gives reason to suppose that even this provision was owing to any other cause rather than to any generous feeling in his breast; for he not only acquiesced in the insults so meanly put upon the illustrious corpse of Blake, under whose auspices and commands he had per formed the most creditable services of his life, but, in the trial of Argyll, produced letters of friendship and confidence to take away the life of a nobleman, the zeal and cordiality of whose co-operation with him, proved by such documents, were the chief ground of his execution; thus gratu itously surpassing in infamy those miserable wretches who, to save their own lives, are sometimes persuaded to impeach and swear away the lives of their accomplices. - Hz´:tory raft/re Reign q/jame: II.
