It so happens that the ordinary methods, which are employed for the elliptical analy sis, and most of which are too well known to need setting forth here, require a fair breadth of field, and would therefore not easily apply, for example, to a ray passing through a pin-hole. The research presented in this paper had its origin in a problem suggested to the writer some years ago by Dr. L. P. Sieg, and was begun in 1915. It has been carried out at Coe College by means of apparatus, much of which was kindly loaned for the purpose by the University of Iowa.
