New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston - An Owl Book, 1985. 306 Pages. Minor wear on the front/spine cover. No other defects noted and the interior text pages are flawless. First published 1983 under the title The Johnson Family which was a then a term denoting good bum and thieves with moral codes of honor. This 1985 Edtion is the First Owl book. Novelist, poet, essayist and painter William S. Burroughs (1914 - 1997) also wrote under the pen name William Lee. A major figure of the Beat Generation, he affected popular culture as well as literature. Long expatriated in Paris and elsewhere, he is known for frank accounts of his life as a drug addict as in The Naked Lunch (Paris, 1959). This present book, one of some 18, was written in London and is the second volume of a trilogy sandwiched between Cities of the Red Night, 1981, and, The Western Lands, 1987. Unlike Burroughs' earlier works distinguished by accidental episodes, the trilogy was first composed as a straight narrative, then cut-up and re-assembled to erase the straight linear form. In this series of time-travel adventures, Burroughs's narrators are able to rewrite episodes in history and thus reform mankind. In this case, to allow gunslinging Kit Carson to organize Earth into a saner world with the help of scoundrels, bums, and theives . that is to say, his own Johnson Family.. First Owl Book. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 6" x 9".
