London. 1973. Collins & Harvill. 1st British Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket With Some Small Tears & Small Pieces Missing. ISBN:000261507x. Translated from the Turkish by Margaret E. Platon. 412 pages. hardcover. FROM THE PUBLISHER - THEY BURN THE THISTLES is the story of a bitter war between the poor Turkish peasants of the Taurus Mountains of Anatolia and the greedy Aghas who covet their land and are prepared to go to any lengths including theft, arson and murder to get it. Ali Safa has determined to take possession of the village of Vayvay but its inhabitants will not sell, Then one named Hassan weakens, he is prepared to part with his few acres, though only in exchange for the Agha´s best stallion, The deal is agreed but Ali Safa cannot forgive Hassan for having taken his much prized stallion and his men set fire to Hassan´s house and stable, The horse escapes and Hassan is driven from the village. Ali Safa orders Adem, a crack shot, to pursue and kill the stallion who is now running wild, On the few occasions that Adem sees him, the stallion seems to be invulnerable to bullets, Adem loses his pride in his marksmanship and nearly his sanity; he begins to believe that the stallion must be under some supernatural protection. Parallel with the fate of the stallion is that of Slim Memed, a village boy who, as told in MEMED, MY HAWK, is the defender of the poor and the scourge of their oppressors. Having rid the country of a wicked Agha, he is now an outcast and, like the stallion, pursued by men who intend to kill him, The villagers did not have the heart to resist Ali Safa, but when they know that Memed is among them they take courage for he has become a legend. While hidden in a melon garden, recovering from a wound, doubts begin to assail Memed-was it of any use to kill a wicked Agha if one even more wicked succeeded him? He recovers his health and falls in love with the girl who has nursed him; his doubts vanish, The stallion, whose fate is so like his own, appears and becomes the mount on which he goes out with renewed faith to accomplish his destiny. The book has all the quality of a great epic, the lives of simple people are invested with grandeur and their problems are seen as those which confront all humanity. The writing is superb, not surprisingly, for Kemal´s style has beep compared to that of Thomas Hardy and critics have described him as the first Turkish author to break the language barrier and become an international figure. Yashar Kemal was born in 1922 in the small village of Hemite which lies in the cotton growing plains of Chukur ova. His father´s forbears were well-to-do feudal lords, his mother´s brigands. When he was five, Kemal saw his father murdered while praying at the Mosque. The shock caused him to develop a severe stammer, and for several year. he was only free from it when he sang. As a result he began very early to improvise songs in the tradition of the Anatolian minstrels. When Kemal was nine he decided to walk daily to a distant village where he could learn to read and write. Eventually he went for three years to a secondary school at Adana. After this he labored in the rice and cotton fields, operated a threshing machine and became a factory worker, he also taught. His championship of the poor peasants caused him to be hounded out of every job; nevertheless he managed to save enough money to buy a typewriter and set himself up as a public letter writer in the small town of Kadirli. In 1950 he was arrested and tried for alleged communist propaganda but was acquitted. He then went to Istanbul and became a reporter on the newspaper Cumhuriyet. His articles, written in a style new to Turkish readers, won him the Journalists´ Association Prize for Good Reporting. In 1952 he published a book of short stories: YELLOW HEAT. In 1955 came his first novel Ince Memed, published in English under the title MEMED, MY HAWK. This won the Varlik Prize for the best novel of the year. It has sold a quarter of a million copies in Turkey and has been translated into many languages. Yashar Kemal is married; his wife has translated several of his novels into English. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Turkish Workers´ Party, now banned. In 1971 he was held in prison for 26 days, then released without being charged. In another action brought against him it connection with a translation of a left wing book, he. was sentenced to 18 months in prison. inventory #32400 ISBN: 000261507x.

Turkey’s greatest novelist, Yashar Kemal is an unsurpassed storyteller who brings to life a world of staggering violence and hallucinatory beauty. Kemal’s books delve deeply into the entrenched social and historical conflicts that scar the Middle East. At the same time scents and sounds, vistas of mountain and stream and field, rise up from the pages of his books with primitive force. Memed—introduced in Kemal’s legendary first novel, Memed, My Hawk, and a recurrent character in many of his books—is one of the few truly mythic figures of modern fiction, a desperado and sometime defender of the oppressed who is condemned to wander in the blood-soaked gray zone between justice and the law. In They Burn the Thistles, one of the finest of Kemal’s novels, Memed is on the run. Hunted by his enemies, wounded, at wit’s end, he has lost faith in himself and has retreated to ponder the vanity of human wishes. Only a chance encounter with an extraordinarily beautiful and powerful stallion, itself a hunted creature, serves to restore his determination and rouse him to action.
