In this book, for the first time, he gives the story of the sixties as he lived them. Starting with his conquest of the New York art world, he tells how his ideas took hold and his reputation grew, until one day a gallery in Philadelphia opened a Warhol show so popular the paintings had to he taken away to protect them. Overnight everyone wanted to meet and be seen with Andy Warhol. Celebrities like Tennessee Williams, the Rolling Stones, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, William Burroughs, Montgomery Clift, Rudolf Nureyev, and Jane Fonda started drifting up to his silver Factory (as he called his fantastic studio loft). There they mingled with the underground movie superstars like Nico, Viva, Ultra Violet, and the doomed, beautiful Edie Sedgwick, as well as such bizarre characters as the Duchess (who thought nothing of shooting up in New York movie lines) and the equally outrageous Rotten Rita, Pope Ondine, the Velvet Underground, and Candy Darling. The Factory was the place where every kind of scene was made~in the wide~open manner of the sixties~from movies to *** to drugs to rock. For the sixties' idea was that everyone do his own thing, and Andy went along until the day an angry young woman walked off the elevator, took out a pistol, and shot him. When he finally recovered, he knew the free days were over. The sixties~his sixties~were finished. Now, looking back more than a decade later, Warhol coolly assesses the whole Pop phenomenon and his place in it in a unique, informal, and absolutely fascinating book. This inside story by the man who knew everyone gives valuable insights into the worlds of art, film, and rock and the extraordinary blend of youth, celebrities, and night people who inhabit them. ANDY WARHOL has had one~man exhibitions at galleries and museums in New Yon., Los Angeles. Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, Pasadena, and Seattle, and in Paris, Buenos Aires, Milan, Stockholm, Toronto, Turin, Hamburg, Cologne, Amsterdam, Munich, Oslo, Berlin, Naples, Rome, Zurich, Geneva, and Kuwait. There have also been retrospectives of his work at the Tate Gallery in London in 1971, in Tokyo in 1974, and at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971 and 1979. The films he has directed and/or produced since 1963 include Sleep, Kiss, Empire, Apple, Vinyl, Nude Restaurant, My Hustler, The Velvet Underground, Chelsea Girls, Bike Boy, Lonesome Cowboys, Blue Movie, Flesh, Trash, L´Amour, Women in Revolt, Heat, Frankenstein, Dracula, and Bad. He is the author of Andy Warhol's Index; a, a novel; The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again; and Andy Warhol's Exposures. He is the publisher of Interview magazine, which he began in 1969. PAT HACKETT was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and now lives in New York City. A graduate of Barnard College, she has written several screenplays, including Andy Warhol's Bad. She has known Andy Warhol since 1968.
