The charming full -color illustrations, executed in colored pencil, reinforce the light mood. They are attractively centered in trompe-l'oeil parchment rosettes on ever y other page. Their details convey an accurate sense of time and place, and the loving attention to scene and costume makes the period come alive. Plu me juxtaposes the text and illustrations on facing pages, creating a useful story-hour selection. She has also dressed the heretofore naked elves in p atched long johns, making them possibly more acceptable for young eyes, but losing some of the whimsical realism of Hogrogian's sketch for the tale in About Wise Men and Simpletons (Macmillan, 1986) or in Paul Galdone's paint ings (Clarion, 1986).
