Editor Hugo Adam Bedau makes his bias plain in the preface: "I ... am opposed to the death penalty in all its forms, no matter how awful the crime or how savage the criminal." Although several pro-death penalty selections find their way into this anthology, the bulk of it presents the opposition's case. According to several contributors, capital punishment does not deter crime nor does it do a good job of preventing recidivism, and it also may be racist in its application. General readers might prefer a more objective volume than this one, but Bedau has done a good job of presenting a strong case for his viewpoint without completely neglecting the other side.
