For his first fully comprehensive biography, Dick Wilson has been collecting information on Zhou ever since his first encounter with the Chinese premier in 1960. Drawing widely on reminiscences of Zhou's associates, as well as on all available documents from Chinese and Western sources, he portrays Zhou in all his dramatic, contradictory aspects, as he follows his subject from birth into an impoverished Mandarin family at the end of the nineteenth century through his emotionally turbulent childhood, his student days in Japan and Europe (where he joined the Communist Party), and the 1920's and 1930's, when Zhou refined his diplomatic and organizational talents, fighting first the Chinese warlords, then the Guomindang, then the Japanese invaders. He led a historic uprising in Shanghai, and took the Red Armies into the famous Long March of 1934-35. The central chapters of Mr. Wilson's biography concern Zhou's activities in Yan'an, and the events surrounding the Communist victory in 1949 and the establishment of the People's Republic.'
