2017 Rainbow Award Winner for Best Gay Historical In 1845, as America is drowning in its own racial conflict, in a time when forbidden love has to remain a secret, can two young men find love when one has everything to lose, and the other has nothing? For Tobias, a young African man, life has ended before it began. Snatched abruptly from his homeland and enslaved into the Antebellum South, grand homes and majestic oak trees meant little to him. Now he is considered the property of other men, but his spirit would not be broken. The awkward Benjamin Nathanael Lee lives a privileged life. His father owns the largest tobacco plantation south of the Mason Dixon line. Ben wants little to do with the harsh realities of running a plantation—that is, until he meets Tobias, the one person that changes everything for him. Wealth, greed, and power brought them together. The same now threatens to separate them forever. The two men are on the verge of losing the one thing that matters: their love for one another. Against the odds, they steal off and embark on a journey to find freedom: the freedom to love one another and to live a life without the chains of slavery. Come to the Oaks is the tale of a forbidden romance—a love forged by two young men as they journey through a land that is tearing itself apart. 2017 Rainbow Award Winner for Best Gay Historical In 1845, as America is drowning in its own racial conflict, in a time when forbidden love has to remain a secret, can two young men find love when one has everything to lose, and the other has nothing? Great reading in the highest tradition of historical romance in the matchless experience to be found in this novel of love and war, written with fire, enthusiasm, and loving detail. In 1835 thousands of American settlers in Texas, betrayed by Mexico's General Santa Anna and threatened with virtual enslavement or wholesale slaughter, called for help. With the stream of volunteers from the US came Perry Allan, youthful lawyer who, as 2nd son of an impoverished family, had left Maryland to seek his fortune westward. In New Orleans he had found the woman he loved, when the desperate summons from Texas came. Camilla, a beautiful young widow, herself in the tyrannical hold of a wealthy benefactor, could not see that honoring the love of freedom was so intertwined with that of personal love, refusing to defend the first made the second unworthy. So Perry left for Texas alone, to take up land there and to fight for it beside his beleaguered fellow Americans. Thus the opening of this richly eventful novel leads into a drama of great conflict, on the battlefield and in the human heart. The flaming events of the Texan war for independence, from the Alamo to the final struggle at San Jacinto, when the Texans, with their fifes and drums playing a popular song, "Will You Come to the Bower," defeated Santa Anna, are magnificently detailed, hour to hour, day by day. So, too, is Camilla's long journey into Texas where, seeking Perry in a wilderness of despoilers, ragged armies, and fleeing women and children, she discovered, as Perry had said, that love is the only conqueror of death. The excitement of the novel lies in several things: the sense of historic truth about what really happened during those desperate months; the feeling of identification with the thoughts and actions, the manner of life, of the many characters, both real and fictional, that crowd the pages; and a total involvement with the spirit and the ideals of a time of misery and glory.
