ISBN: 9780674133983 bzw. 0674133986, vermutlich in Englisch, Harvard University Press, Taschenbuch, gebraucht, akzeptabler Zustand.
142 p. In very good condition. - The Classic was written ten years ago, and has for some time been hard to find. This reissuing gives me a welcome opportunity to correct some typographical errors in the original publication. I have made no substantive alteration in the text. -- A decade is a long time in modem literary criticism, and this decade seems to have been more than usually crowded and contentious. Moreover, as times change we change with them. Reading through the book I notice various expressions I might no longer want to use, and some points I should now wish to express differently. In general, however, I see little need to amend the idea of the classic as it is here expounded. The analogy between the classic and its various interpretative manifestations, and the doctrine of essence and dispositions as developed by Ernst Kantorowicz (see page 32), is mentioned from time to time in the course of the book, and it still seems to me illuminating. It is, of course, only an analogy; it illustrates the relationship of an (ideally) invariant text with its constantly changing interpretations. Some might take it to refer directly to a formula different from mine-to E. D. Hirsch's distinction between 'meaning' and 'significance'. But these terms are used to support the view that the only meaning is the author's, and that subsequent applications of his text have no bearing upon this meaning. I myself think of the author as the first of the interpreters. He certainly has that measure of priority. But what I understand by 'essence' is not the author's meaning; it cannot be identified with any interpretation or 'disposition'. ISBN 9780674133983 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 113, Books.
