L`annee 1810, est faite d`agitation sentimentale, entre une epouse que Constant aime et une Germaine de Stael qu`il ne peut abandonner dans les malheurs qui la frappent. D`enormes pertes au jeu lui imposent ensuite la vente des Herbages avant que son pere lui dispute les biens qu`il lui avait remis. Le voyage vers l`Allemagne, au printemps 1811, donne matiere a des lettres a dominante touristique, mais l`accueil au Hardenberg et le confort intellectuel qu`offre a Constant la bibliotheque de Gottingue ne suffissent pas a faire renaitre un vrai bonheur. En 1812, la mort de Juste, les evenements militaires et les inquietudes suscitees par la fuite de Germaine de Stael, qui a quitte Coppet pour un periple europeen, l`empeche de retirer du travail auquel il s`astreint les satisfactions esperees.
