This volume features essays that present a new approach to image theory. It explores the many ways images become active in architecture and engineering design processes. The authors use the term active to capture the vast array of actions that images perform, from representation to communication. Images may also perform functions and have an agency all their own. This volume features essays that present a new approach to image theory. It explores the many ways images become active in architecture and engineering design processes. The authors use the term active to capture the vast array of actions that images perform, from representation to communication. Images may also perform functions and have an agency all their own. The contributors investigate different types of images. They look at pictures, sketches, renderings, maps, plans, and photographs. In addition, coverage also investigates different types, including analog, digital, planar, three-dimensional, ephemeral, realistic, and imaginary. Readers will learn how the jobs that images perform and the roles they may play are not necessarily set. Rather, they may vary, be it according to their context, the type of image, or the phase in the design process. The essays capture the performative and operative nature of images. Some offer a historical approach, others present a theoretico-philosophical account, and yet others feature a thorough examination of case studies in architecture and engineering. However, active images are present in other disciplines as well. Thus, the valuable insights contain within this volume can also help readers to better understand how images operate and function in the arts and sciences in general.Taal: Engels;Afmetingen: 235x155 mm;Verschijningsdatum: juni 2017;Druk: 1;ISBN10: 331956465X;ISBN13: 9783319564654; Engelstalig | Hardcover | 2017.

It explores the many ways images become active in architecture and engineering design processes and how, in the age of computer-based modeling, images play an indispensable role. The contributors examine different types of images, be they pictures, sketches, renderings, maps, plans, and photographs; be they analog or digital, planar or three-dimensional, ephemeral, realistic or imaginary. Their essays investigate how images serve as means of representing, as tools for thinking and reasoning, as ways of imagining the inexistent, as means of communicating and conveying information and how images may also perform functions and have an agency in their own. The essays discuss the role of images from the perspective of philosophy, theory and history of architecture, history of science, media theory, cognitive sciences, design studies, and visual studies, offering a multidisciplinary approach to imagery and showing the various methodologies and interpretations in current research. In addition, they offer valuable insight to better understand how images operate and function in the arts and sciences in general. Lieferzeit 1-2 Werktage.
