A lunated "ap was raised, and the bone was sawn a little above the trochanter minor. The patient died three months afterward, with large purulent col lections extending into the pelvis through an opening in the cotyloid cavity. The third authenticated instance of excision of the head of the femur, and the first example of the performance of the operation for gunshot injury, occurred in 1829. It was a primary operation, performed by Dr. Oppenheim,2 of Hamburg, then in the Russian military service. The history of the case, which was to a certain extent encouraging, obtained but little publicity until printed, eight years after the operation, in Dieffenbach s Journal. As the case marks the introduction of this operation into military surgery, forty years ago, all its details are of interest.
