Excerpt from An Address Delivered in Behalf of the Ladies' Soldiers' Aid Society of West Cambridge Let us, then, to-night, standing here on this historic ground, this very spot where British and American bullets once crossed each other with deadly' aim, close to which the first capture of the Revolution was made, let us remember our Fathers. The memorable year 1 775 opened gloomily. The public mind was in a state of extreme irrita tion throughout the colonies, and only a spark was required to set all in a flame. There was no disposi tion to redress grievances on the part of the crown; the arbitrary and Oppressive acts of the royal gov cruor called forth constantly more strenuous, but so far only passive, resistance on the part of the people, and yet both alike were shrinking from the last resort. I find in the note-book of Samuel Cooke, first pastor of this parish, which he kept mostly in Latin, a few remarks which perhaps may be interesting as showing the general state of things at this time.
