In the poetry of a nation we can feel the pulse-throb of national life that shows its healthful development or decay. In the history of the past we find that a poetic spirit has existed in a more eminent degree in some nations than in others; but among all the higher types of mankind - those races which have exerted a marked influence upon human progress - poetic feeling and sentiment seem to have permeated the entire mass of the population. These feelings and sentiments were imperceptibly formed by the pure aspirations, affections and emotions of man's better nature.
