Karl Marx is primarily known for his criticism of European capitalist society. Though his ideas are especially attractive to many non-European societies and especially anti-colonial movements, his writings about colonialism have not yet received as much attention as his analytic writings on European capitalism. Still, Marx has written roughly 400 pages about issues related colonialism. In this paper I will introduce the reader to Marx's perception -not Marxist perceptions- of French colonialism in Algeria. I proceed from the very concrete to the more general of Marx's writings. I will also include those of Engels's writings into my analysis that were either co-authored by Marx, or written on his behalf. I find it reasonable to include Engels's writings where helpful, because, as Padover notes, 'the two young Germans [.] found that they were in agreement on all basic questions, philosophic, political and religious.' The first chapter examines Marx's letters to Engels, his daughters Laura Lafargue and Jenny Longhuet, and his son-in-law Paul Lafargue during his stay in Algiers in spring 1882. I will look at his perception of his direct environment. How does the old man Karl Marx, talk about Algiers, Algeria, the Algerians and their colonizers? Having analyzed those letters, I will discuss Engels's explicit writings about Algeria. In this part of the paper it will be of great interest to examine how Engels represented French politics and behavior in the colony. Unfortunately, Marx never wrote an article about Algeria explicitly, but it is quite safe to assume that Engels's writings discussed in this paper had Marx's full support.I will then provide a brief overview of Marx's writings about colonialism in general. Since Marx lived in London for the larger part of his life he was much more aware of British colonialism in India than French colonialism in Northern Africa, and therefore wrote more extensively about the former. This is not to say that he had no knowledge.

This is not to say that he had no knowledge about developments in Algeria. In his 1858 article on The Indian Army for instance, he even referred to the resistance of the Bedouins of Algeria when talking about British colonialism. The underlying question of my paper is what Marx really thought about colonialism. Was it necessary in order to abolish Oriental Despotism and the Asiatic Mode of Production, and why?
