ADOLESCENTS' PERCEPTION OF CITIZENSHIP AND DEMOCRACY IN GHANA Because Ghana has understood the need for citizen education, it is a rich site for investigation of this topic. The current study focuses specifically on how Junior Secondary School students (ages11-16) perceive democracy and citizenship, how the curriculum introduces ideas about citizenship and democracy, and how these and other sources influence students' developing conceptions of both. Students in this study attempted to reach into their own history and compare elements of past governance to aspects of Ghana's democracy today. They also explored world citizenship and their part in a global world. Through interviews and digital photography, students verbalized citizenship attitudes and actions such as unity, tolerance, respect for law and order, patriotism, and an understanding of rights and responsibilities. This work will give professors, classroom teachers and civic educators new insights into what is involved in imparting citizenship education as well as students' perceptions of the topic.
