In this work, novel circuit breaker designs are presented, which do justifiably neglect the design impact of the switching arc. As a result, switches that show a remarkably simple design and ultra-fast operation with opening and closing velocities up to 50 m/s and a complete interruption time below 1 ms are implemented. Design guidelines hereto are given and the mechanical performance is explained. As the switching arc was considered not to determine design, it is essentially the high opening velocity together with an intelligent control that leads to a remarkable power switching performance, which is thoroughly discussed. It is concluded that medium voltage current limiting circuit breakers, load switches, dc-breakers and turn-on switches up to rated values of U,= 24 kV, Ir = 2 kA, I(als Index: prospetive) = 40 kA are feasible using the innovative mechanically simple ultra-fast switches.
