Transnational family networks are at the centre of this book. Based on a case study of the House of La Trémoille in the seventeenth century, this monograph re-examines the role of women in estate management, church patronage and court politics. It offers new insights on Huguenot nobility and the political and personal impact marriages of mixed confessions had before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Female transmission of faith within the domestic unit is put here in a wider context of church politics and patronage, in France as well as in the British Isles, marked by political and social upheaval. Focusing on two women of the La Trémoille family, Duchess Marie and Charlotte de La Trémoille, who married James Stanley, 7th earl of Derby, this book shows what scope of action noblewomen had in a patriarchial society. Questions of gender and status are raised by their involvement in the Fronde and in the English (and Scottish) Civil Wars. These exceptional circumstances may have rendered female action more visible, but it is argued here that female petitioning, networking and negotiating with men in power were part of everyday practice. Based on private sets of correspondence and a wealth of other archival sources, this book offers a new take on family interactions and noble cultures of seventeenth-century France and England. Kindle Edition, Ausgabe: 1, Format: Kindle eBook, Label: Kliomedia, Kliomedia, Produktgruppe: eBooks, Publiziert: 2012-07-25, Freigegeben: 2012-07-25, Studio: Kliomedia.
