The dragon is one of Asia's most powerful symbols and is commonly used as a central motif in architecture, painting, sculpture, and crafts. But the dragon is far more than just a decoration; it occupies a special place deep in the heart of all Orientals as a guardian spirit in Buddhism, a symbol of royal power, and an object of faith in folk religions. Thought to have originated from a form of serpent used as a totem by Central Asian peoples, the dragon has gone through many changes throughout the ages. The classic form of the Oriental dragon that has come down to modern times was settled on in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Though the Korean dragon, presented in this book, has been strongly influenced by the Chinese dragon, it also possesses unique characteristics that set it apart from other representations of the dragon. The materials in these pages were gathered from museums, temples, palaces, and items of folk crafts all over Korea and were prepared using computer-aided design.
