Mira Mihelic, as she tells her young readers at the end of this book, was born in Split, in Croatia, but brought up by her Slovene grandmother in her father's old home in "Zabukovje" (the mining town of Trbovlje). This is the setting of "Come, My Gentle Ariel" with its many references to the writer's own childhood; the dreamy, emotional, impulsive and imaginative young girl of the book, a new type of character in Slovene children's literature when the story first appeared in print in 1965 is clearly based on the writer herself. The children's version of Shakespeare's "Tempest" was put on in Trbovlje in 1920. Back in Ljubljana, where she had completed her education, Mira Mihelic finished her first novel just before war broke out in 1941 and after the war while bringing up her children - and after - she published several more novels, most dealing with Slovene life and history, a very substantial number of translations (including for instance, all the major novels of Dickens) and a range of stories for children as well as many successful plays. From the nineteen-sixties onwards she was active in the Slovene writer's society, helping to re-found the Slovene PEN club and to organise the big international PEN Congress in Slovenia in 1965. This helped to make her a widely known figure in international writing circles as she played her part in congress around the globe. Liked and respected all over the writer's world, Mira Mihelic, an international vice-president of PEN Club, died in 1985. Her autobiography, "Ure mojih dni" (The Hours of my Days) gives a full and readable account of a writer's eventful life. "Come, My Gentle Ariel", with its story of a young girl responding to challenges, gives some impression of how that writer's life began.
