Hon. Alhaji (Dr) Asoma Abu Banda, the Chairman,Antrak Group (London and Ghana), was bornin June 1933 at Kintampo in the Brong AhafoRegion of Ghana.Alhaji Asuma Banda started his elementary education atKintampo and continued at the Government Boys Schoolin Kumasi. For fear of little Banda being converted from hisMuslim religion, his father prevented him from continuinghis education because in those days all the schools wereChristian mission schools.Even though Banda's father was a popular businessman,he did not find life easy at all. His father had a contractto supply food and meat to the Ghana Army. His fatherintroduced him to the business world and was exposed tomoney very early in life. Unfortunately, like the prodigalson in the bible, little Banda messed up the business dueto inexperience. In view of that the father took away thebusiness from him and withdrew all the privileges from him.As a result, young Banda became a self exiled in Kumasi. Hekept himself in the room out of shame and disgrace.Another problem Banda's father who was a strong UnitedParty (UP) member had with him was the fact that Bandajoined the Kwame Nkrumah Young Pioneer, a group whichwas perceived to train young people to spy on their parents.Between 1955 and 1957 in order to teach young Bandaa bitter lesson, his father assigned him an arduous job ofbuying cattle from Mali, Niger, and Upper Volta (nowBurkina Faso) and transported them on foot to Kumasi.Little Banda and his uncle had to spend several days to travelfrom these countries to Kumasi by foot grazing the cattlealong the way.74After many months of enduring with that kind of business,young Banda decided to travel to the United Kingdom sohe could have opportunity to further his education withoutthe knowledge of his father. Banda on his own struggled tosecure his travel documents and under difficult circumstancesmanaged to get to the United Kingdom.In the United Kingdom Banda joined a SocialistOrganization. Out of that organization, Nkrumah gavescholarship to a lot of Africans and young Banda was abeneficiary. Through the scholarship, young Banda was ableto sit for his Ordinary and Advanced Level Examinations. Healso obtained diploma in Marketing/Sales Management. Helater undertook several courses in Marketing, Management,and Shipping.Afterwards, Alhaji Banda worked with several peopleincluding one Major Mensah to gather experience andpractical knowledge of the business world. At one time hejoined the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in London asthe Director responsible for Africa and the Middle East.He ventured into private business in 1975, establishing ashipping company in London, OT Africa Line and AntrakGroup of Companies (London and Ghana) with somepartners. Today, over146 branches of his companies havebeen opened in countries across the world, creating jobs forover 500,000 people.Alhaji Asoma Abu Banda has been entered into the public'sHall-of- Fame as a renowned entrepreneur, philanthropist,role model and a patriot.Alhaji Banda has a long track record of philanthropy and ahigh sense of social responsibility, personally and corporate75wise. In 1999, his Antrak Group of Companies financedthe reconstruction, refurbishment and maintenance of thematernity wing of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital at a totalcost of almost GH¢100,000.Furthermore, in collaboration with his foreign-partners,Alhaji Banda invested US $10 million in the establishmentof the Tema Container Terminal, creating about 100 jobs inits wake.He also established the Crime Prevention Foundation tohelp resource the Ghana Police Service and other securityagencies. He constructed a female cell for the Nima PoliceStation in Accra.
