First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated. Very Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of rubbing; a couple of hairline creases at the backstrip. The Binding remains square and secure; the text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 4to. 190pp. Preface by Dr. Roy Godson. Profusely illustrate with photographs in black & white. Sewn binding. (Pergamon-Brassey's Intelligence & National Security Library). Trade Paperback. An excellent book which uncovers the use of retouching to produce propaganda images. It covers the Soviet Union, the Eastern Bloc, China, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Castro's Cuba. This book was fascinating to me because I never realized the photo montage parlor tricks of the 1930s were being used by world governments to rewrite their revolutionary histories. Although there are no examples of photo manipulation by the United States government, no doubt they have likewise participated in photo deceptions at times during out own great history. In fact, the careful positioning and staging of all photos taken of Roosevelt are a perfect example of content manipulation to disguise the fact he was in a wheelchair. I loved the side by side comparisons in the book that show the original photo and the various "doctored" versions that have appeared (and disappeared) over time in history books and museums. The original French edition was published in 1986 by Editions Barrault and the copy offered here was published by Brassey's in 1989 for their Intelligence and National Security Library series. It really visually reveals a well-trodden path of photo manipulation/censorship by repressive governments over the past several decades. First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated.
