United Kingdom: David & Charles, 1974. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 5.5" X 8.75. h/b 208 pages, condition is very good, this is an exlibray book with the usual stamps. Although only eighty feet of water now separate it from the mainland, Cape Breton Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, has retained much of the peace and beauty which originally attracted settlers, in search of a better life, to the New World. Today, despite the new era of industrial development heralded by the building of the Canso Causeway, the island, with its almost undisturbed countryside, wooded hills, tranquil lakes and quiet river valleys, is still able to give the twentieth-century city dweller a glimpse of traditional rural life. It is a region rich in natural beauty where spectacular views and dramatic scenes, such as Cape Smoky dropping sheer to the sea with 'its foot washed by waves and its summit shrouded in clouds, are common- place. Wild life, too, is abundant-in the Highlands, National Park caribou and moose roam free, the lynx still inhabits the remote, wooded parts, and the white-tailed deer is an important big-game species; and there are birds in plenty, most notably the bald eagle, the official symbol of the USA. Salmon and trout are found in many rivers. But the interest of the island is not limited to these aspects. Its varied history can be traced from the Micmac Indians, through the early pioneers and settlers, to Colonial times-the great fortress of Louisbourg, now in the process of being restored, stands as a reminder of Anglo-French hostilities over Canada in the eighteenth century. Cape Breton Island's diverse heritage also makes for an interesting blend of local life to which Indians, French and Scots all contribute the distinctive flavour of their respective traditions.
