This same work has been carried on along the right of way of the Missouri Pacific Railway. It will take but a short time to complete the clearing out of this part of the forest. Two thousand five hundred and sixty-five brush fires were burned during the year. The following seed was place planted: Black oak, 2 pecks; white oak, 3 pecks; burr oak, 1 peck; black walnut, 4 pecks; white ash, 5 pounds; sugar maple, 5 pounds; red elm, 2 pounds. Young trees were transplanted as follows: For the military prison reservation 425 For remainder of Fort Leavenworth Reservation 100 Total 525 During the year there were four forest fires, making a total damage of approximately 50. The following timber and wood was cut and gathered from the forest land during the year: Wood for fuel purposes, cords 700 Poles for construction purposes, assorted sizes 3, 346 Posts for construction purposes, assorted sizes 1, 889 Timbers for construction purposes, assorted sizes 1, 719 Railroad ties. -800 Lumber, feet, board measure 36, 779 CONSTRUCTION OF NEW PRISON. The construction of the new prison under the acts of Congress approved May 27, 1908, and March 4, 1909, was continued throughout the year. The following industries in connection with the construction were carried on: Rock crushers and quarries. --During the year two rock crushers were operated continuously. Stone to supply these rock crushers was supplied from two rock quarries. Under the authority of the War Department, rock was supplied to the authorities of the post of Fort Leavenworth for road making and other purposes.
