Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (January 1832 January 1898), better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy, and there are societies dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life in many parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and New Zealand. Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Alice in Wonderland, is one of the most well known fictional tales of the 19th century. The themes and settings of Through the Looking-Glass mirror Alice in Wonderland: the first book begins outdoors, in the warm month of May (4 May), uses frequent changes in size as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of playing cards; the second opens indoors on a snowy, wintry night exactly six months later, on 4 November (the day before Guy Fawkes Night), uses frequent changes in time and spatial directions as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of chess. Additionally, there are many mirror themes, including opposites, and time moving backwards. This edition of Carrolls Through the Looking Glass is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and is illustrated.
